The iPort/USB combines the low-cost communication features of I²C with the power of USB connectivity. Its USB interface, advanced processor, fast communications, larger data buffers, and optimized firmware make this a good choice for communicating with I²C devices during product development, testing, and configuration.

Supporting Master, Slave, Transmit and Receive operations, the iPort/USB gives users access to multi-master systems at selectable bus speeds up to 400 kHz (Fast Mode), with messages up to 64K bytes in length. The iPort/USB provides immediate access to I²C devices with its included Message Manager and Message Center application software, or a user can create custom applications using high-level commands in the iPort/USB's application program interface.

Compatible with 3.3 V to 5 V buses, the iPort/USB can be powered from its USB interface or an external power supply. In addition to standard clock and data signaling, provisions are also made to sense or control the bus interrupt signal found on many slave devices.

The driver implements a Virtual Communication Port (VCP), so although it uses the USB, it provides a standard communications port interface for application programs. This VCP allows the iPort/USB to be backwards compatible with our iPort/AFM and iPort/AI I²C host adapters. No application software changes are required.
